Grade 5 – Term 1:

During the first term, the students will review their basic recorder skills, along with the fingerings for B, A, G, C, D, F#, and E. Students will review musical notation in the treble clef, as well as counting in common time. Through our non-directed listening program, the students will continue to enhance their listening skills as they broaden their listening experiences. The Grade Fives will also participate in preparations for our Christmas musical, which will include the singing of songs of greater difficulty, with a concentration on in-tune singing.

It is expected that the students will be able to:

• read musical notation fluently;
• understand theory used in text;
• play recorder with good tone, demonstrating correct hand/finger position;
• demonstrate conscientious effort in classroom activities;
• listen carefully and respectfully to music;
• sing in-tune with large group; and
• cooperate with and respect others.

Grade 5 – Term 2:

During the second term, the students will work on vocal and dramatic skills during the Christmas Musical. They will continue to develop their skills on the recorder, learning the fingerings for notes F natural and B flat. The students will increase their theoretical knowledge of chromatics, rhythmic analysis, eighth notes/rests, key signatures, and first/second endings. In addition, the Grade Fives will continue to develop their listening skills through our non-directed listening program.

It is expected that the students will be able to:

• sing songs of greater difficulty in tune;
• demonstrate conscientious effort in concert preparations and all classroom activities;
• display a positive attitude towards musical learning;
• read musical notation fluently;
• play recorder with good tone, correct hand and finger position;
• understand theory used in text and discussed in classroom activities;
• listen carefully and respectfully to music; and
• cooperate with and respect others.

Grade 5 – Term 3:

During the final term, the students will continue to develop their listening skills and music appreciation through our non-directed listening program. They will continue to develop their skills on the recorder, learning the fingerings for low C, D, and E. Theoretical studies will include time signatures (4/4, 3/4, and now 2/4), pick-up notes, dotted notes, tempos, slurs, and rhythmic counting.

It is expected that the students will be able to:

• demonstrate conscientious effort in all classroom activities;
• play the recorder with good tone, demonstrating good hand and finger position;
• understand theory displayed in text and discussed in classroom activities;
• develop their recorder abilities through regular home practice , and come fully prepared to class;
• listen carefully and respectfully to music; and
• display a positive attitude towards musical learning.
